International Moving / Importation of Used Vehicles or Motorcycles

To import a car in Argentina it is necessary to fulfill certain requirements. We will tell you about them below to clear your doubts. 

  • A person of Argentine nationality who has lived abroad for more than 2 years. When he/she decides to return to the country, he/she includes the car in the move. 
  • Car collector who imports a collector car. 
  • Public official (the official must be accredited as such at the Dirección Nacional de Ceremonial). 
  • Person with different capacities. 

First we must say that any citizen wishing to make this purchase cannot do so as with any other product. If you can import a car to Argentina under the following circumstances: 

Conditions to be fulfilled to be able to import a car to Argentina. 

Having the right to import a car into Argentina because it belongs to the aforementioned group no import tax is paid However, certain conditions must be met: 

  • The vehicle cannot be worth more than U$D 15,000. 
  • It must be owned and used by the importer and be registered in his name at least three months before its re-entry into the country. 

This benefit does not include the cost of taxes and fees to nationalize the car. Only cars for private use may enter the country, and trucks, motorcycles and boats of all kinds are excluded. 

It is always advisable to seek advice at the Argentine Consulate or Embassy of the country of residence, and to hire a customs broker in our country to carry out the relevant procedures. 

Importing a car into Argentina across a border 

If the vehicle to be imported enters the country by crossing a border, the owner must have the following documentation: 

  • Temporary entry form issued by Customs at the Border. 
  • Original Certificate of Residence, showing residence abroad for more than two years. 
  • Proof of Migratory Movements issued by Migrations of Argentina. 
  • Updated DNI (National Identity Card) 
  • Proof of CUIT-CUIL. 
  • Original documentation of the car, completed and stamped by the Argentine Consulate or Embassy in the country in question. 
  • Invoice of the vehicle, stamped by the Consulate or Embassy of Argentina. 

Importing electric or hybrid vehicles 

Another regulation that has been recently enacted in our country is a reduction from 0% to 5% for the entry of electric or hybrid vehicles.Previously, these vehicles were subject to an import tax of 35%. They may only be imported by automotive terminals located in the country. 

In order to belong to this category, vehicles must be powered by electric motors only or also those with an internal combustion engine as an alternative (hybrids). They must be vehicles for private or family use, and passenger or cargo transportation vehicles are excluded. 

Importation of classic or collector vehicles 

Recently, the State simplified the procedures to import classic or collector vehicles. These vehicles must be at least 30 years old and their value in the country of origin must exceed U$D 12,000. The requirements for importing this type of vehicles are as follows: 

  • FOB (Free on Board) value over U$D 12,000.  
  • To be be at least 30 years old., como mínimo. 
  • Registration in the Single Registry of the Ministry of Production. 
  • Count with TAD(Trámites a Distancia), issued by AFIP (it can be processed online from AFIP's website).

Special case - People with disabilities 

In the case of people with disabilities, they are allowed to purchase a new national vehicle without paying VAT. In case the vehicle is imported, they do not pay: 

  • Import duties. 
  • Statistical Fees for Port Service. 
  • Internal taxes and VAT. 

This exemption only applies to 0Km vehicles, it is not applicable to used vehicles. The holder must be the disabled person and the vehicle will be for the exclusive use of the holder. 

In any of the above cases, in order to import a car in Argentinathe vehicle in question may not be sold before it has been in the country for 2 years.
